Affordability Crisis? Illegal Immigration Drives Up Everybody’s Cost of Living

Trump Derangement Syndrome was on full display during the State of the Union speech, wasn’t it?

I hope Republican candidates for the Maine Legislature were paying close attention.

We will know soon enough how many of them are willing to play offense in this election cycle, the way President Trump played offense against the loathsome leftist lunatics in the House chamber Tuesday night.

Not a single Democrat legislator stood in support of Trump’s declaration that the first duty of the American government is to protect Americans, not illegal immigrants.

Make no mistake: illegal immigration is the ultimate “affordability” issue for voters from Maine to Minnesota to California.

The cost of providing freebies for foreigners — free health care, free education, free housing, free groceries — comes at the expense of all Maine taxpayers. It’s a simple equation: welcoming thousands of illegals to settle here at taxpayer expense drove rents up and wages down. It’s called the law of supply and demand.

But it’s worse than that.

The thousands of Samoli Supremacists who emigrated to the Lewiston area decades ago have been ripping off MaineCare for multiple millions of dollars since Janet Mills took office in 2019, if not earlier. All of those thefts came at the expense of elderly, disabled, low-income Mainers who qualify for MaineCare coverage but can’t get needed services.

Every single Democrat in the Maine Legislature who has been silent about the rip-off is complicit. With majorities in both chambers, they have no excuse for their lack of oversight. They own it.

Republicans need to flip three seats in the Maine House and three in the Maine Senate to bust up the Democrat legislative majority in November. It’s their best opportunity since the Tea Party wave of 2010.

Any GOP candidate who shies away from making the illegal immigration crisis a central issue in the midterm election campaign is making a mistake.

Yes, the polls show that voters are most concerned about “affordability.”  And the truth is that Illegal immigration is the biggest factor in driving up everybody’s cost of living.

Whoever the candidates are in your House and Senate district, be sure to have a conversation with them.

Let’s not throw away this historic opportunity to drain the swamp in Augusta.
