MAGA Mom Unseats Woke School Board Chair in Downeast District

It’s not often that a school board chairman in rural Maine gets unseated by a challenger who has never run for public office.

But it happened last week in a district where the chairman has been a board member for the past 13 years and chairman for the past nine years.

The race in RSU 24 wasn’t even close, with MAGA mom Carla Jung of Franklin racking up 56% of the vote.

I can tell you that Carla ran a flawless campaign. She focused her energy on introducing herself to voters and asking for their support to make education great again in RSU 24.

(The district is comprised of the coastal Hancock and Washington County towns of Eastbrook, Franklin, Gouldsboro, Mariaville, Steuben, Sorrento, Sullivan, Waltham, and Winter Harbor. Once she is sworn in, Carla will be one of nine board members, and she will represent Franklin.)

Maine First Project made an independent expenditure for Carla consisting of a “slick” (an oversize postcard) that drew a sharp contrast between her and her opponent:

When our slick landed in mailboxes a week before the election, the hysterical backlash on social media was almost instantaneous. Defenders of the incumbent spewed falsehoods and vitriol but never addressed any of the three bullet points that triggered their temper tantrums.

The cyber mob made lots of noise, but in the end, it was just that: noise. If anything, the screamers may have boosted support for Carla’s campaign.

With those lessons in mind, Maine First Project will host another free Activist Training on Friday, May 9th, from 9 a.m. to noon, at Jeff’s Catering in Brewer. We require a $10 per person deposit to reserve your seat, which is fully refundable at the door. RSVP by clicking HERE.

MFP executive director Zach Gelpey and I will discuss strategies and tactics for flipping school board seats this year in the run-up to next year’s momentous midterm elections.

We will be joined by Rep. Reagan Paul of Winterport, who will share her insights on the current “emergency” session of the Maine Legislature as it lurches toward adjournment in June.

And we’re pleased to announce that MAGA mom Carla Jung will be there to discuss her electoral victory in last week’s RSU 24 school board election.

See you there!

Best Regards,
