Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau is fretting that needy Mainers may be denied their fair share of free groceries unless the Legislature takes quick action to protect food stamp recipients from the Trump administration’s penalties for states with an eligibility error rate above 6%.
Maine’s most recently reported SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) error rate was 10.26 percent in 2024.
If enacted, Fecteau’s emergency legislation will cost Maine taxpayers $87,846,400 in fiscal year 2025-2026, including an appropriation of $864,000 for administrative costs.

I wonder how many of Maine’s numerous Somali non-profits will get no-bid contracts to whitewash the error rate…
Here’s how Fecteau described the burden President Trump is imposing on food stamp recipients in Maine.
I don’t know about you, but it appears to me that large numbers of these recipients would have great difficulty jumping through a single hoop, much less 5,000 hoops.

In other news….
Maine First Project will host a free Activist Training in Augusta on Saturday, May 30th, from 9 am to noon. This event is by invitation-only, and we ask for a fully refundable $10 deposit to reserve your seat.
Shoot me an email if you’re interested.
These 3-hour sessions are basic training for patriots who know something is terribly wrong, but aren’t quite sure what they can do to help restore Maine to The Way Life Should Be. We will cover what you need to know to make a difference in the midterm elections.
Let’s leave our children and grandchildren (and great-grandchildren) a state at least as good as the one our parents and grandparents bequeathed to us.
Best Regards,

Hon. Lawrence Lockman
