From the Pew to the Ballot Box in the Great State of Maine

I was pleased to be among the 1100-plus Mainers who gathered in Orono last month to participate in what may have been the biggest prayer meeting in Maine history.

OK, it wasn’t exactly a prayer meeting, but four local pastors were among the guest speakers who prayed for a revival of the Judeo-Christian worldview on which the Founders relied 250 years ago in their revolt against the tyranny of King George III.

The event was hosted by our friends at the Christian Civic League of Maine.

The keynote speaker was Eric Metaxas, author of seven New York Times bestsellers, including his million-selling biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. His newest book is Revolution: The Birth of the Greatest Nation in the History of the World.

Metaxas is the founder and host of Socrates in the City and The Eric Metaxas Show. His work has been translated into more than 25 languages and has inspired films, documentaries, and conversations about faith, history, courage, and freedom.

If you haven’t read any of his books, my recommendation is to start with Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, which recounts the failure of church leaders in Germany to stand up against Hitler’s madness when there was still a chance to prevail against the Führer.

Read as much of Metaxas as you can. You won’t regret it.

And if you want to get involved locally, check out the Civic League’s “Pray for Maine Sunday” coming up on September 20th, 2026.

The mission?

…” to help your church encourage Biblical citizenship, voter registration, and ballot requests, so believers are ready to bring the light of the Gospel into every corner of society.”
