Battle Over Slums-to-Suburbs Mandates Rages on at the Statehouse: Round 2 Coming Up!

By March 17, 2022October 11th, 2022No Comments

The Left’s campaign to outlaw single-family residential neighborhoods in Maine took a big step forward yesterday.

I’m sad to report that the Democrat majority on the Labor and Housing committee ignored the ambush of outreach from Maine Patriots like you.

The metropolitan elitists just gave a thumbs-up to Speaker Ryan Fecteau’s Slums-to-Suburbs mandate.

If enacted, LD 2003 will empower swamp-connected, government-subsidized “non-profit” developersto transform small-town Maine into a rural version of Portland’s crime-ridden slums.

Sometime in the next few weeks, Fecteau’s bill will move to the floor of the Maine House of Representatives for debate and a vote. In the meantime, two more so-called “affordable housing” bills will be up for votes in committee tomorrow morning.

Frankly, the chances of derailing or slowing down these assaults on Maine as “The Way Life Should Be” are slim. This is what one-party rule by authoritarian Leftists looks like.

Our best hope is to throw the central planners out in November so we can begin the work of repealing their socialist agenda. But between now and election day, we need to hold Republican feet to the fire.

Beginning now!

The two bills that we need Republicans to vote “Ought Not to Pass” are:

  • LD 1673, An Act to Create a Comprehensive Permit Process for the Construction of Affordable Housing sponsored By Rep. Rachel Talbot Ross of Portland, and
  • LD 1961, An Act to Help Alleviate Maine’s Housing Shortage and Change the Membership of the Maine State Housing Authority sponsored by Sen. Craig Hickman of Winthrop

These are awful bills!

They’re every bit as bad as Fecteau’s. We need Republicans to just say NO for a change — instead of trying to put lipstick on a pig.

Please tell them you expect an unyielding Ought Not to Pass (ONTP) vote when these bills come up for a vote tomorrow.

You can watch the proceedings live at 10 am tomorrow by clicking here.

I’m asking you to contact these legislators once again because they didn’t seem to get the message the first time.

Would you believe that not a single one of the above-listed Republicans voted “Ought Not to Pass” on Fecteau’s wretched LD 2003? They all voted for an amended version of the bill. You might call it Slums-to-Suburbs Lite.

It looks to me like a pathetic attempt at virtue-signaling.

Whatever they were thinking, their “compromise” will never see the light of day beyond the committee room — Democrats have the votes to flush the GOP bill down the swamp’s memory hole when Fecteau’s bill moves to the House.

I can promise you this: Maine First Project will continue to hold legislators accountable, whether they have an R or a D after their name. With all that’s at stake in the political and cultural warfare that rages around us, we can’t afford to have faint-hearted soldiers in the trenches.

If you are able, please consider chipping in with $10, $25, $50, $100, or whatever you can afford to support our work at Maine First Project, so we can continue to be your eyes, your ears, and your megaphone at the Colosseum on the Kennebec.

Thanks for all you do every day to make Maine such a special place. Together, we will pull our beloved state back from the precipice.

In politics as in war, always march TOWARD the sound of gunfire!

Sincerely,

Hon. Lawrence Lockman
Maine House of Representatives, 2012-2020

PS

Can you believe Republicans on the Labor and Housing committee caved under pressure yesterday?

Instead of saying NO WAY to the Democrat plan to outlaw single-family residential neighborhoods, Republicans sprinted for the cover of the tall grass. Then they cobbled together a slimmed-down version of Speaker Ryan Fecteau’s Slums-to-Suburbs declaration of war on rural and suburban Maine.

Let’s make sure they know you expect them to smarten up tomorrow when they will have a chance to redeem themselves.
